The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare
ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a
highway for our God.
Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and
hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made
straight, and the rough places plain:
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh
shall see it together: for the mouth of the
Lord hath spoken it.
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall
run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40: 3-5. 31

The whole of life must be an 'advent,' a vigilant
awaiting of the final coming of Christ.
Pope John Paul II
And Mary said,
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
Luke 1: 46-49

Advent, like its cousin Lent, is a season for prayer and
reformation of our hearts. Since it comes at winter time, fire is
a fitting sign to help us celebrate Advent...If Christ is to come
more fully into our lives this Christmas, if God is to become
really incarnate for us, then fire will have to be present in our
prayer. Our worship and devotion will have to stoke the kind of
fire in our souls that can truly change our hearts. Ours is a
great responsibility not to waste this Advent time.
From "Fire of Advent,"
by Edward Hays
Excerpted from 'A Pilgrim's Almanac'
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
Psalm 130: 5-6
