Dear Readers,
Every Tuesday morning I attend church at our local Retreat Center.
It's nestled into the foothills and decorated by nature with pine trees,
grasses and bushes. Add in the planted fruit trees and it's a veritable
smorgasbord for deer. They roam freely, nibbling away at everything.
This morning there were about six of them in the lower parking lot.
All but one eased away to the nearby field as I parked my car. The one,
a young buck with two thin twigs sprouting atop his head, just kept on
munching. I walked within six feet of him and stopped. We looked each
other in the eye: he, calm and fearless and I, in a state of wonderment
at the precious moment. He was absolute confident that he was safe,
even though a deer's lot is to be prey, not predator. He was fearless
because he completely trusted that no harm would come to him.
He knew he was protected in that space. He's my new role model
for being fearless. I'm completely safe inside God's space.

"The Great Wave" by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)
From that which we fear, O Lord, make us fearless.
O bounteous One, assist us with your aid.
Drive far the malevolent, the foeman.
May the atmosphere we breathe
breathe the fearlessness into us:
fearlessness on earth
and fearlessness in heaven!
May fearlessness guard us
behind and before!
God the Rescuer,
God the Savior,
Almighty, whom always we joyfully adore,
powerful God,
invoked by all men,
may he, the bounteous, grant us his blessings!
From The Oxford Book of Prayer
_________
Let our first act each morning be the following resolve:
I shall not fear anyone on earth. I shall fear only God.
Mohandas K. Gandhi (1869-1948)
Indian spiritual and political leader
From "The Story of My Experiments with Truth"
The Last Word:
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear;
but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
